States of Light
The City States
Traditions of hospitality are so deeply ingrained in the city states that they have taken root in the fabric of reality. Breaking these traditions will have in-game mechanical effects as well as story consequences.
If a homeowner invites someone into her home, she accepts responsibility for the safety of that person for the duration of their stay. If any harm comes to a guest, the homeowner (and potentially her entire family) will be cursed.
Away from civilization, this tradition is expressed by the sharing of food and alcohol. Anyone who takes hostile action against someone he has recently shared food and drink with will suffer the same curse as that suffered by a homeowner who does not protect her guests.
Vows are not something to be taken lightly in the city states. A person who breaks a vow they spoke voluntarily is cursed as an oathbreaker – a curse even stronger than that for breaking hospitality.
